Balancing Academic Excellence With Dreams of College Basketball: The Story of Patrick Shamamian

2 days ago 9

At 16, Patrick Shamamian is focused on more than what happens on the court. With exceptional grades, a strong sense of character, and a commitment to improving his game under trainer Gary Chivichyan and Blueprint Project, he is working toward a future where academic success and competitive basketball go hand in hand.

For Patrick Shamamian, success is about more than what happens on the basketball court. At just 16 years old, he understands that building a future requires discipline in the classroom just as much as it does in the gym.

A dedicated student-athlete, Shamamian maintains exceptional grades while continuing to develop his basketball skills. His goal is to pursue college basketball without losing sight of his education, personal growth, or the character he believes should define him both on and off the court.

He knows talent alone is not enough. Getting extra shots up, improving strength and conditioning, studying film, and listening to coaches are all part of his routine. He is learning to approach setbacks as opportunities to improve rather than allowing a difficult game or a slow period of progress to define his potential.

His ambition is to compete at higher levels and eventually play college basketball, earning opportunities through consistent effort, coachability, and preparation.

Balancing Academic Excellence With Basketball Ambitions

The path to college athletics requires more than strong performances during competition. Student-athletes must manage demanding schedules, maintain their academic responsibilities, and develop the maturity to handle pressure.

Shamamian takes that balance seriously. His academic performance reflects the importance he places on education, while basketball continues to teach him teamwork, accountability, and resilience.

He also recognizes that every athlete develops at a different pace. Rather than comparing himself with other players, he is focused on improving his own game and learning from the people around him.

For Shamamian, being a good teammate matters as much as individual achievement. He wants to be known as someone who competes hard, accepts coaching, and does what the team needs. These qualities are central to the person he hopes to become, regardless of where basketball ultimately takes him.

Blueprint Project: Youth Basketball Development in Glendale, Chatsworth, and Los Angeles

Finding the right development pathway is one of the biggest challenges facing young basketball players and their families. Beyond finding a team, athletes often need individual coaching, competitive experience, physical development, mentorship, and guidance on pursuing opportunities at the next level.

Blueprint Project, a youth basketball development organization serving the broader Los Angeles basketball community, aims to bring these elements together.

With a presence associated with Glendale and Chatsworth, Blueprint Project offers a development-focused approach that includes private and group basketball training, AAU tournament teams, strength and conditioning, mentorship, and guidance for athletes working toward higher levels of competition.

Its broader mission is to give young players a roadmap for growth, helping them understand what they need to improve and how to approach the increasingly competitive world of youth and college basketball.

Gary Chivichyan and the Path to Higher-Level Opportunities

Shamamian trains under Gary Chivichyan, known as the greatest Armenian basketball player of all time, boasting multiple historical NBA firsts, big time division one college basketball accolades, and an extensive professional career overseas alongside Blueprint Project, which holds some of the top coaches, trainers and agents in Los Angeles, and where the focus extends beyond individual skills to the broader demands of competitive basketball. The goal of the Blueprint project is to help athletes and their families navigate their decisions with a clearer sense of direction.

Chivichyan’s athlete-development work has been associated with opportunities for players pursuing both college and professional basketball. Rafayel Masumyan, who recently signed with the University of Evansville marking an important step in his college basketball journey, is one example. Another example is Matt McAndrews who received two private training opportunities with the Warriors and Bulls organization, and recently earned an opportunity to join the Windy City Bulls 2026 NBA G League training camp, confirmed by a recent announcement of the training roster camp by the Bulls. Such examples illustrate the different pathways athletes may pursue their goals as their skills develop. For young players, access to experienced trainers, competitive environments, and guidance can help them better understand the expectations of the next level.

Building a Future One Step at a Time

Shamamian’s journey is still in its early stages, and he is not claiming to have reached the finish line. He is focused on continuing to excel academically, becoming a more complete basketball player, and earning the opportunity to compete at the college level. He also wants to use his story to eventually impact youth, who is now looking up to him as an upcoming prospect. He wants to give back to the community just as he did in his junior high and high school years where he helped coach youth summer league basketball in his school’s community.

When we asked Shamamian what his goal and vision was moving ahead he said “I just want to become the best version of myself. I have the support of my coaches and family, and I want to do everything in my power to make them proud. This is only the beginning of my journey.”

His story reflects an important lesson for young athletes: ambition matters, but so does the patience to develop the skills and habits needed to support it.

For Blueprint Project, his journey reflects the broader purpose of youth basketball development: helping young athletes build their abilities, understand their options, and prepare for opportunities in a sport that is rewarding but difficult to navigate. For now, Shamamian’s focus remains simple-keep learning, keep improving, and keep working toward the next opportunity, both in the classroom and on the court.
