Firearms injuries were the leading cause of preventable death among Alabama children in 2024, and unsafe storage played a role in a striking share of those deaths, according to the state’s latest Child Death Review System report.
Some 710 children — from infants to teens — died in Alabama in 2024, based on a preliminary count. Of those, 275 were investigated further because they were unexpected or unexplained deaths. Local review teams completed in-depth reviews of 223 of those cases.
