That’s the basic plot of Craig Gillespie’s film, an adaptation of the 2021-2 comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. We met Clark Kent a.k.a. Kal-El’s younger relative at the end of James Gunn’s Superman. The follow-up explains a bit about her origin story and personal philosophy about the difference between nice and good. She’s a classic reluctant hero who gets the push she needs over the course of the film.

When Does Supergirl Come Out?
Supergirl flies into theaters on June 26, 2026. Directed by Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film is the second movie in DC Studios’ new DC Universe following 2025’s Superman. Inspired by Tom King and Bilquis Evely‘s acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series, the movie follows Kara Zor-El as she embarks on a galaxy-spanning journey alongside a young girl named Ruthye in a quest for justice.
How can I watch Supergirl now?
Supergirl was released in theaters on June 26, 2026. You can see it at your local multiplex in a standard format or premium choices like Dolby, IMAX, RealD, and my beloved 4DX. That said, part of the 4DX experience includes interactive smells, and I don’t think any of the planets Kara goes to in the movie are fragrant in a good way.
Where will Supergirl be streaming?
Supergirl is currently playing exclusively in theaters, and Warner Bros. has not announced an official streaming release date.

Because it’s a Warner Bros. Pictures release, the film is expected to stream on HBO Max after its theatrical run, though the studio has not confirmed when that will happen. Based on recent Warner Bros. release patterns, the movie could become available to rent or buy digitally later this summer before arriving on HBO Max, but those dates remain unconfirmed.
When will Supergirl be streaming?
Let’s make this easy, and use Kara’s cousin as an example. Superman was released in theaters on July 11, 2025 and landed on HBO Max on September 19, 2025. Two months is pretty quick, especially for a summer blockbuster. It typically takes three to four months for most movies to make the move to streaming. But presuming Supergirl follows suit, that means we could see it on HBO as early as August, 2026. Woo!
Is the new Supergirl movie streaming on Netflix?
Supergirl is not streaming on Netflix and likely will not be on Netflix any time soon, due to the fact that the film is a Warner Bros. release, will have a streaming home on the Warner Bros.-owned streaming service, HBO Max. If you want to watch the new Supergirl movie at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms, or wait for it to stream on HBO Max.

When will the Supergirl 2026 movie be streaming on HBO’s Max?

Wuthering Heights, for example, was released on PVOD about a month-and-a-half after opening in theaters, and began streaming on HBO Max about two-and-a-half months after it was released in theaters. If Supergirl follows a similar release pattern, you may see Supergirl on digital around August 2026, and streaming on HBO Max around September 2026.
But that’s pure speculation. The Warner Bros. home releases have varied by title. If you want to see Supergirl right away, your best is to catch the movie in theaters.
What Is ‘Supergirl’ About?
Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El, cousin to Kal-El (alias Clark Kent, Superman, and David Corenswet), who survived the destruction of planet Kyrpton, unlike her parents Zor-El and Alura (David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham). Now, while her cousin fights for truth, justice, and the American way, she’s less inclined towards heroics, and spends most of her time hanging out with her unruly dog, Krypto, and getting drunk on planets with red suns. However, she gets caught up in the interplanetary quest of Ruthye (Eve Ridley), who’s looking for vengeance on the cruel Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). The film is directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), and written by Ana Nogueira, who is also set to pen movies for DC icons Wonder Woman and the Teen Titans.
Supergirl previously hit the big screen in the 1984 film of the same name; loosely connected to Christopher Reeve’s Superman movies via Marc McClure’s Jimmy Olsen, the movie starred Helen Slater as the high-flying heroine, pitting her against evil sorceress Selena (Faye Dunaway). That film was a critical and commercial flop, earning $14 million USD on a $35 million budget and garnering a 20% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes.
