Miss Manners: How do I ease out of a conversation with someone who’s taken?

Dear Miss Manners: I go out to bars and other places to meet a potential long-term partner. If I strike up a conversation with someone and then find out that they are not single, I don’t want to waste any more time with them, but I don’t want to abruptly stand up and walk away.
